Leaky Glace?
03-29-2012 7:12 AM

I've had a bottle of Glace for a few months now. I notice that whenever I go to use it, the whole outside of the bottle is covered in a slippery substance (presumably silicone). The bottle is stored upright in a cool, dark environment. Any ideas?

Your bottle must have tipped over at one point in time.

The same thing happened to my bottle of Glace. Just make sure the spray head in screwed on nice and secure, then put the cap on the bottle...then take a paper towel and wet it with rubbing alcohol and give your bottle a good cleaning.

Actually, same has happened to me.

I just tightened the bottle and washed it. Silicone is a slippery substance often used as a lubricant.

I don't suspect there was any escaping due to osmosis but at one point must have been on it's side , leaked abit and then stayed since it doesn't evaprate.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me when my glace first showed up in the mial. The spray cap is a little crooked on mine, if I tip it upside down or lay it on it's side it will slowly leak...

Luckily, I have a shelf in a cabinet I keep all my mones in, so I haven't had an issue since I first got the glace.

Most of my Alpha Dream products seem to have that effect. Plenty in the bottle though. I am not disappointed, yet was curious regarding this thread. Thanks, Guys.

Yea, my bottles feel slimy, and I keep them upright on a shelf. I don't believe they've ever leaked - even in transit - they came completely topped off. I think the reason my bottles feel greasy is that tiny droplets of the product land on the bottle every time I spray said bottle. The vast majority of the spray ends up on me - but you know what the mist would look like with good lighting behind the sprayer - a mist of silicone droplets billowing around me like steam. Ever been around a deep-fryer? It puts off tiny droplets of cooking oil that are invisible to the naked eye yet accumulate on every surface creating a film of grease on the walls, on you, your hair and sunglasses, everything. Same principal, I think the glace "mist" that you cannot see is building up. At least, this was the conclusion I came to when I had the same question myself. Hehe

This is an issue since silicones like to creep up the side of any edges, (like liquid helium) I forget the name of this effect off the top of my head. Since a small fraction of the silicones are non-evaporable, it brings these to the surface when the lighter fractions evaporate out of the bottle. this leaves the feel of thick (1000 centistoke) dimethicone...

This will be less of a problem once we get better quality spray caps (by summer) and once we switch everything over to fast burn silicone (4 centistoke - to 20 centistoke) which is planned soon. Will let the forum know before anything is actually switched over.

That's cool. Thanks for the explanation. I've kept my bottle upright on a shelf since day 1, so I couldn't figure out how the silicone was escaping. I figured it was climbing back up through the straw for some reason.

Maybe it's your secret ingredient that want to get out and apply itself?
