The trouble with triclosan
09-24-2012 10:01 PM

Triclosan, used in many liquid hand soaps as well as toothpastes, has recently been shown to have a harmful temporary effect on muscle tissue and possibly other systems as well. I haven't gone over the study itself, just news reports.

Quote:In addition, the mice had an 18-percent reduction in grip strength for up to 60 minutes after being given a single dose of triclosan....

The UC Davis research team has previously linked triclosan to other potentially harmful health effects, including disruption of reproductive hormone activity and of cell signaling in the brain.

A copy of the study, titled "Triclosan impairs excitation-contraction coupling and Ca2+ dynamics in striated muscle," can be requested by e-mailing [email protected].

Quote: is an antibacterial and antifungal agent. It is a polychloro phenoxy phenol. Despite being used in many consumer products, beyond its use in toothpaste to prevent gingivitis, there is no evidence according to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that triclosan provides an extra benefit to health in other consumer products.[1] Triclosan safety is currently under review by the FDA[1] and Health Canada.[2]

Yay someone else noticed! I've posted about this a few times myself, I threw out everything containing it in my home!

I'll spray anything apparently...
