Shorten search requirement
08-27-2012 8:20 AM

hey admins,

the current forum search function requires at least 4 characters which is not very effective as most forum members use abbreviations such as TA, NA, FB and so on. Thus is it possible to shorten the search requirement to just 2 characters like ptalk so it will better facilitate members in finding existing threads? thanks in advance

Personally, I went "aaarrrggg" the other day when I couldn't search for L2K because it was three characters.

The alternative scenario would be generating an almost useless search result if it was shortened to two characters. How many words contain TA or NA etc.

5 drops npa will be my standard answer if I dont think you read anything.

Paradigmshift answered the question for me, but in adition to endless results the load on the server would be huge.

from my understanding the search function only search independent terms, excluding letters found within words.

And you're dead wrong.

To search under 4 letters requires using a search string which searches all content within text. But, if you know the myBB platform better than I or the programmers tht WROTE it then maybe yu should be running the forum.

Unless you KNOW what you're talkng about, maybe you SHOULDN'T be chiming in!!!

Mark and paradigm are correct on this one.

Depending on the extra server strain it could probably still be somewhat practical for character combinations that are somewhat unique, like "AV". if the server is busy enough already, it's probably not a good idea.

As a fix, i may just append some term in front of the 'mones in my reports from now on. Like "__AV" or "P_AV".
