Getting significantly shorter after working out.
04-04-2014 4:45 PM

I was shocked to find out that my normal height 5'8" before working out is reduced to 5'6.5" after. And this reduction in height last sometimes into the next day or two.

What is going on? I lift light weights , 20 lbs dumbells only, do 2 sets of 10 reps for about 6 exercises , then I walk /jog intervals for 18 min, then I stretch all major muscles for 10-15 min.

What I find out is I am 1.5" shorter after this workout and I can't get the height back. Is this a sign that something is seriously wrong?

The weights aren't heavy enough like a powerlifter to do any compression damage. I don't sweat at all, not one drop of sweat during my workout so I can't be losing water.

Does anyone have any solution to this. 5'8'" is pretty short for a man these days and I don't need to lose another 1.5 inch that stays lost for 24 hrs or more thereafter.

I have a feeling the loss of height is in my spinal discs.. something is dehydrating the discs. I tend to drink lots of water and coffee throughout the day as much as 3 cups of coffee and 10 cups of water.

Today I tried taking an advil after when I got home.. I am wondering if i'm experiencing swelling of the joints in the bones and discs because I do feel in pain somewhat are rather tense in neck and back even though I stretch.

Sometimes I find stretching makes me SHORTER as it weakens muscles making them more lax.

Any tips?

I don't care to grow, just not to lose height so badly.. I understand all of us are 1/2 inch shorter at night compared to morning, but 1.5 " is ridiculous and unhealthy.

As a current pre-medical student and soon to be a physician, I highly recommend going to a doctor or to a specialist to see what's going on. Most medical advice and so called "research" online is completely non-reliable, sometimes is completely wrong and misleading (even when its coming from a user with 10k posts and bodybuilding body in the profile picture) and aren't likely to diagnose you like a person who spent at least a decade doing post-secondary education, spending between 100k-300k.

As a safe measure, I would say stop working out at all (stick with cardio, but again very light) and see if your height actually changes back to how it's supposed to be.

The faster you fail the faster you succeed.

stretching should not make you shorter, actually tthe opposite. Probably due to several factors. Also running cause serious spinal compression.

Yeah that's what scared me when working out. Although this is the matter that has to be taken to a doctor and see if he can refer you to a specialist.

I sort of gave up on the heavy weight living and sticked with body weight instead, like pull ups and push ups and dips.

NuTrix- I wouldn’t change a thing in my past because it’s made me who I am, and I LIKE me, but I’ll be damned if I let 1 single thing in my past hold me prisoner there

I've changed my workout up a bit and am retesting.

I do weights and cardio on different days now.. I feel the compression from weights followed by sprinting is too much on my ol' bones.

Does running really make you short?

Also my calcium intake was not very good this year. I have started adding back milk into my diet.. 3 cups a day. I get 75% of my calcium this way and the remaining 25% through other foods.

I'm hoping milk will help my bones more.

However. I also find milk makes me fat.. Even skim.

Can't win!

Dude, if you feel like theres a significant change with your height I would not pass this one lightly... a few mm is okay but an inch and half is something to be concerned about... did changing your workout routine return your height to normal?

The faster you fail the faster you succeed.

My height is back to healthy range with only half inch deviation. I added water rich FOODS to my diet like more fruits and veges and also milk. Turns out I must of been dehydrated from eating mostly proteins etc and also low on calcium and only drinking lots of water.

Critical point, water will not hydrate your spinal column and body if you don't consume enough water rich FOODS. I learned my lesson.

I can definitely relate to feeling shorter after some heavy squatting, didn't actually measure myself though.

Getting shorter after working out is no longer an issue now.

I only do BWE. No weights.

I may lose 1/2 inch from my morning height but its gained after resting in bed, or by the next morning.
