"Dark Side" of Oxytocin
08-06-2011 12:34 AM

Wrote:Washington, August 02 (ANI): It was earlier known that oxytocin- the "cuddle chemical"- promotes positive feelings, and is the hormone that helps mothers bond with their babies. But a recent research has found that it can promote negative emotions, too.

"Quite a number of studies have shown it's actually not that simple," said Andrew Kemp of the University of Sydney, who co-wrote the paper with his colleague Adam Guastella.

Recent studies have found that people who were given oxytocin, then played a game of chance with a fake opponent, had more envy and gloating. These are also both social emotions, but they're negative.

"It kind of rocked the research world a little bit," added Kemp.

That led some researchers to think that oxytocin promotes social emotions in general, both negative and positive.

But Kemp and Guastella think oxytocin's role is slightly different. Rather than supporting all social emotions, they thought it plays a role in promoting what psychologists call approach-related emotions. These are emotions that have to do with wanting something, as opposed to shrinking away.

"If you look at the Oxford English Dictionary for envy, it says that the definition of envy is to wish oneself on a level with another, in happiness or with the possession of something desirable," said Kemp.

"It's an approach-related emotion: I want what you have," added Kemp.

Gloating is also about approach, he said; people who are gloating are happy-a positive, approach-related emotion-about having more than their opponent and about that person's misfortune.

The study has been published in the Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. (ANI)

This could be a good thesis paper for some lucky chump. As Oxytocin creates an approach emotion instead of just the "bonding" emotion. How about this idea: "Oxytocin as an approach emotion facilitator: creating both the bond of mother/newborn and the neurostimulated jealousy of both infant siblings and housepets".

Could oxytocin make people want to bond, and then cause the jealousy that little kids have for their parents attention when a new brother/sister is born?

Also could it be what causes sibling rivalries? kids vying for mom's attention, competing with each other based on hormonal cues that are taken differently with different contexts? The context being, oxytocin + Mom = bond with mom, oxytocin + mom + sibling = compete with sibling to bond with mom.

A few shots in the dark, I would call this a derivative or second derivitive in math terms. It isn't the amount of hormone the oxytocin creates in your body, but how it is compared to other hormones or external stimulation for a relative ratio contributing to a emotional physiological/effect.

True Trust and Liquid Trust are the ones i know.

Had some great hits with True Trust, idk if it was the Oxytocin in it, or the pheromones, but it was very short-lived.

SXD-9 and Voodoo from LAL most likely have Oxytocin. This is speculation from several users, and having used both regularly the past few months I can definitely see the effects mentioned above, especially in Voodoo.
